BASE CAMP

5334 metres (17,500 feet)

Hundreds of people from all over the world descend on Base Camp every climbing season with the aim of climbing the world’s highest peak. Base Camp is a bustling community of more than 200 people consisting of climbers (including guides and climbing Sherpas), base camp support staff (cooks, medical personnel, porters and base camp managers) as well as some trekkers who come to support individual climbers or just to visit the famous Everest Base Camp.

Basecamp

Each expedition team stakes out their camp as close to the mountain as possible but far enough to be out of the range of avalanches. Base Camp is a climber’s home from home whilst on an Everest expedition. Each climber usually has their own tent for sleeping whilst the expedition will have several larger tents for communal activities such as a mess tent, communications tent, wash tent and of course the toilet tents!
